camping is in-tents.

i'm off into the woods!!
maybe its not that exciting because we aren't hiking in anywhere...
rather, we're driving.
if we get scared of bears, we're sleeping in the car but at least we'll set up our tent!
and eat s'mores and drink boxed wine.  that's all that matters, right?
while big camping treks are rewarding, car camping is just as fun.
here are some not-always-necessary but always-pretty-cool-accessories to take next time you head out into nature.
don't forget the bear spray!!
2. vintage bocce ball set - why not?
7. headlamp - dont leave home without one

altitude sickness.

people always laugh at me when i warn them of altitude sickness.
but i've had a handful of family and friends who have experienced it.
headaches, vomiting, one friend's mom even needing an oxygen tank!
going from sea level to 6,327 feet can throw your body out of whack.
if you are traveling to the mountains this summer,
here are a few altitude sickness tips.

Preventing Altitude Sickness
- drink plenty of water.
i warn people to start drinking way more water than normal about two weeks prior to their visit.
and take lots of h2o with you on your adventures.
-acclimate gradually.
start out slow and steady when heading out on a hike or climb.
-take it easy on the booze.
alcohol will hit you a lot harder so be careful when you head out to the cowboy bar.

*the following tips on treating altitude sickness are brought to you by Valerie Johnston at Healthline.com.

Treating the Three Types of Altitude Sickness

The world is indeed getting smaller, and as that happens, more people are pushing the limits of where humans can go for adventure.

Some people head up into the mountains just to enjoy some new scenery. Others like to push their own limits, participating in all-terrain races up and down mountains. Whatever the case, travelers and trekkers of all types need to be aware of the effects of altitude sickness. This form of illness can affect all sorts of people, particularly those that live at lower altitudes and are accustomed to the atmospheric conditions of those areas.

Higher altitudes differ from lower altitudes in a few ways. First, their air is thinner and air pressure is lower as the altitude rises. This means that the body has less access to oxygen, and the changes in air pressure can cause their own issues, as will be discussed. Beyond that, the air tends to be drier at higher altitudes. This, combined with the fact that the air is thinner, results in decreased athletic ability: Any amount of exertion can result in dehydration and exhaustion at very high altitudes.

Read on to learn about the three types of altitude sickness and how they can affect the body at higher altitudes.

Acute Mountain Sickness

Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is the most basic form of altitude sickness, and it comes from rising in altitude at a rate that is faster than your body is able to adjust. This is because of the rapid change in environment that you experience as you ascend. The thinner air causes a variety of symptoms if the individual rises too quickly, including dizziness, headaches, and decreased appetite. This form of altitude sickness is brought on by lack of oxygen as well as lack of moisture, as dehydration tends to be a problem for people who are experiencing AMS. This form of altitude sickness feels like fairly common nausea, and the way to combat the effects of this type of altitude sickness is to descend the mountain.

High-Altitude Cerebral Edema

Beyond AMS, the lack of oxygen can have much more extreme effects on the body, such as a high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE). The latter part of that phrase refers to a lack of oxygen traveling to the brain, leading to confusion, nausea, and loss of physical coordination. HACE is considered more dangerous than AMS and can even result in coma or death. If you are ascending with an individual that starts to act in a way that is out of the ordinary, characterized by irrational behavior, you should suspect HACE. The best way to test for this condition is to conduct a brief coordination test. If the individual is unable to walk in a straight line, you should descend as quickly as possible.

High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema

A third type of altitude sickness is a high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE). HAPE is different from the other two forms of altitude sickness in that the previous forms come about as the result of a lack of oxygen. HAPE arises as a result of another change in the environment at higher altitudes—lower air pressure. When the air pressure is too low, fluid can begin to gather in the lungs. When this occurs, the individual may start to feel symptoms that are similar to the other forms of altitude sickness, in addition to taking on a pale complexion, with shortness of breath and tightness in the chest, among other symptoms. Treating HAPE is similar to treating AMS and HACE: The individual should move down in altitude in order to gain access to better air pressure and more oxygen.

LOTM: winter fun

besides skiing, there are tons of things to do here in the winter months
my personal fave is snowshoeing.
its a great way to see wildlife while catching some rays on your face.
you can usually rent snowshoes at any outdoor shop for pretty cheap.
so grab your friends, boxed wine, and get shoein'

*locals note: you can get a great deal on rentals at skinny skis

check out other ladies of the mountains: nicole, lena, kelley, gentri, michelle, guest katie.

los andes.

{hotel ayelen.}
{old closed hotel underneath a natural bridge once used by the incas.}
{a nun. tee hee hee.}

{there she is, behind that big fat cloud that wouldn't move for us.}
a few days ago i took a quick trip to the mountains.
just a few hours outside of mendoza sits one of the seven summits of the world, Aconcagua.
at 22, 837 ft. tall, she's a beast.
two friends and i went to stay at hotel ayelen so i could shoot some photos and give a quick social media lesson for the owner of the hotel.
the hotel sits at the very base of Aconcagua in a tiny town called, penitentes.
the last place for climbers to acclimate before they start their two week ascent.
the drive up was absolutely stunning as i've never laid eyes on mountains that tall.
(seven years in tibet was filmed there.  helllllo brad pitt.)
i'm scared to say it but i think i've just added climbing Aconcagua to my bucket list.

and ice cream.  both of which work well for me.

volunteering.  the kiddos are so sweet!

an olive oil boutique opening.  don't ever eat an olive right off the tree.

mullets/rat tail combos are IN for the boys of argentina. the girls perfer mc-hammer style pants, which actually look pretty comfy...
a bus ride where they only played american 90's videos for 7 hours straight.
lisa lobe, celine, sophie b. hawkins.  the gang was all there.
yes, i've questioned if argentina is stuck in 1995.
because i've seen a lot of rollerblading too...

patagonia!

{this my friends, is a real life gaucho (argentine cowboy). love the boots}

i just returned from the best week ever in patagonia.
glamping, fly fishing, hiking, and asados.
i'm so grateful for my time spent there,
the 24 hr bus ride from mendoza was well worth it.
(making the trek solo with my broken spanglish was a feat!)
san martin de los andes is a must see if you are heading to patagonia.
a quaint little town with world class fishing and an incredible lake at the edge of town.
oh, and the roses.
roses line every single street with the most gorgeous colors.
it is definitely a happy town!

the southern hemisphere.

¡hola friends!
i finally made it to argentina.
to the beautiful city of mendoza to be exact.
mountains and palm trees...i mean come on now.
this town reminds me a lot of where i went to school, boulder colorado,
which seems more comforting to me in a way.
just throw in a little euro flare.
i'm staying with a friend from the states, his beautiful wife, and two huge black labs.
minus not being able to count to 10 in spanish, i think i'm going to enjoy my stay.
make sure to follow me along on instagram for daily photo updates: meagtheegg
and don't you worry, many photos to come.

October 27, 2012

the biggest rookie move.

i have a confession to make.
{deep breaths}
i lost my passport.
i know. i know. i know.
i'm an idiot.
like, biggest rookie travel move, ever.
i hesitated for a few days before deciding to post this but i gotta keep it real over here at the egg.
and since i'm blogging about my adventures, i couldn't leave this minor detail out.

first of all, i took it out to the bars.
dumb. dumb. dumb.
in new york city.
dumb and dumber....the sequel.
do you know how much a us passport goes for these days?

anyways, my anxiety level the next day was through the roof and i immediately panicked as i thought about my entire trip ending right then and there.
all the money i had saved.  all the plans i had made.  all of the places to see.  people to meet.  WINE TO DRINK!
alas, my girlfriends forced me to take many a deep breaths and i was able to get an appointment at a passport agency in connecticut the next day.
"soooo, you were born in ohio, your old passport is from colorado, you now live in wyoming, your parents are in florida, and you lost your passport in nyc while making your way to argentina......and now you are in connecticut?????" says the agent.
"yep.  oh, and not sure if you noticed but my birthday is tomorrow.  just in case you needed to know {eh hem} my birth date."
8 hours and $200 later..... i am again a traveller of the world.

October 2, 2012

this week.

this week is race week.
its been 9 months of training and i'm ready for the chicago marathon.
i think.

this week has been gorgeous in the tetons.
i love me some indian summers and bright yellow aspen leaves.
happy to experience fall in the mountains this year.

this week is the start to my trip.
packing for 3 months is a hard task
but i'll pick some things up along my way.

this week is the week i've been dreaming of for years.
you only live once, people.
get out and see the world.

August 9, 2012

a greenhouse in idaho.

{basil and a butterfly}

my jeffers, the handy man, see here
drove me over the pass into idaho to check out this greenhouse he made.
its been a year and all of the plants are in full bloom and d-lish.
i was beyond impressed and it was pretty dang cute to see him so proud.
we added some of the sweet toppings from the greenhouse onto our pizzas
then popped them into this handmade (not-by-jeff-but-don't-worry-i-put-it-on-the-list) brick-oven.
i'm telling ya, the best za's i've ever had!
click here to see what i wore.

{contrary to popular belief, jeff does wear clothing.  sometimes.}
my camera is acting up.
so you'll have to bear with me and the iphone photos.
thank god for instagram.
(follow me if you're looking for a good time: meagtheegg)
here are some snapshots from my weekend at string lake.

we went stand up paddle boarding and i'm full on addicted.
if you haven't tried this, i'm telling you that you should.
this is complete peer pressure.
but you'll thank me for all the fun you had.
